Holly Williams
“Here With Me”
(Mercury)
She’s the daughter of Hank Jr. and the granddaughter of Hank Williams, but the most palpable tendency she shares with the Williams “family tradition” at age 29 is that she’s worked to create and develop her own brand of music, and pursued a career of her own making. With this second album, and affecting collection of lyrically fresh, smart, contemporary songs, she’s come into her own. She’s an indie rock-influenced singer-songwriter first, and does a soulful turn on Neil Young’s “Birds” here, but she’s also unintimidated by expectations-enough to check in with a couple of strong pedal-steel-driven country songs, too.
